In some Native American traditions, the Raven is renowned as both the creator of the world and as a notorious trickster. In European mythologies the Raven is known as a bird of power and prophesy. I created this Raven Hood to honor the spirit of Raven. The design draws from both American and European traditions of identifying with animal spirits or totems by wearing garb that evokes and honors them. Both hoods and masks are used for this in many cultures.
This particular design is loosely inspired by both Northwest Coast and Celtic stylizations. It is practical for both active and quiet meditation when worn squarely on the head, since it reduces the wearer's field of vision to aid concentration; it can also be tilted back on the head to allow a wider view when required. I chose white, yellow and turquoise as accents to express the liveliness of a Raven's curiosity. The lining, with its celestial motifs, refers to the Raven's associations with the spiritual sides of life.
Two of these Raven Hoods were made, and one is offered here. The fabrics are cotton, appliquéd and reverse appliquéd by hand, then hand-quilted. Most of the Raven is black, with white, yellow and turquoise accents. The lining is an imported batik with celestial designs in pale tan on a deep blue ground. The beak's edge contains a thin wire for more control over the beak's shape. While the Raven Hood has ties that can be fastened under the chin, it fits snugly enough on most heads that the ties aren't necessary, even when the wearer is quite active. All new materials.
